MAROC Organizing Campaign- A Diamond in the Rough

The Mid-Atlantic Regional Organizing Coalition, better known as MAROC, was established in  2001. Dedicated to helping workers form and join the Laborers Union, MAROC’s original purpose was to help Construction Craft Laborers in the Mid-Atlantic Region fight for their rights. Since its inception, MAROC has evolved into a voice for all workers, not just Laborers. Some of our most successful campaigns are protecting and advancing working conditions for Public Service and Federal Employees.

The Laborers in the Mid-Atlantic Region are cleaning up in the demolition and asbestos industry.  In just the past year the Laborers have signed several of these contractors.  This success is building more success.  Currently the Laborers are talking to several area contractors about signing.  Because of the shortage of licensed asbestos workers combined with our ability to supply to qualified people, contractors know that they have to deal with the Laborers.

LIUNA's strength lies in its idea that unions work – both for employees and employers. The power of MAROC rests in the skills and talents of members who actively participate in organizing campaigns.

Dulles Airport Janitors Clean Up with the Laborers

If you ever fly into Washington DC’s Dulles Airport, make sure to thank the cleaning service personnel who keep the place spotless!  Not only do they work hard and do a great job, but they are now proud members of Laborers' Local 572.

After months of visits by organizers explaining the benefits of union membership, the janitors – employed by Gali Services – chose LIUNA representation. “With the Laborers we will finally stick together and receive what is fair. We finally believe we can make this a better place to work,” said Steward Sam Davies. This unit of 250 employees now enjoys some of the highest wages within this industry.

Blockbuster LIUNA Growth in Washington, DC Area

In recent years Laborers Local Unions in Washington DC and its Maryland and Virginia suburbs – long suffering from declining membership and market share – have restructured and taken a newly aggressive stance under new leadership teams. Those efforts are starting to pay off: the two new Local Unions, Laborers Local 11 and Laborers Local 657, are reporting the fastest construction membership growth in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
